I'm having the same problem. I have just upgraded to 8.04 and each time I try to change the resolution and monitor settings they either arn't saved or are saved but ignored. I have a Nvidia7300 card with a LG M198WA going into the DVI connection trying to run at [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is happening whether I test it or not. Restarting X is just taking it back to step one, as it rebooting the system.
