Me and a friend at work have the same Packard Bell MZ36 laptops. Same spec and both of ours do the same thing as yours does. Firefox 3 Beta 5 will lock up sometimes. Apt-get and synaptic both freeze the system everything they try to access the web. Both are using wireless networks.
This is definitely a wireless card driver issue, or something related to it because the freeze only happens when it's use. I'd really love to solve the problem but we're not experts either.
