Note: The same issue happens under Kubuntu (the KDE3 generation; haven't
tested with Kubuntu Remix yet).

Thus:
- Under Ubuntu (GNOME), numlockx handles the keyboard LED just fine;
- Under Xubuntu (xfce), numlockx will not control the LED; however, you can run 
"numlockx on" from the "/etc/gdm/Init/Default" script, and the LED will be 
turned on allright;
- Under Kubuntu (KDE), numlockx will not control the LED either; I don't 
remember where the KDE Display Manager looks for its startup script, but I'm 
fairly confident that "numlockx on" can be run from that script, and the LED 
will be turned on right.
