The reason this is irritating is that CUPS and other services with web
interfaces will occasionally redirect you to web pages using the FQDN of
the host.  At that point, you get an error.

Here's a demonstration of the problem.  This is on my server (which is
running bind9 itself):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ping mars.dusk.local
ping: unknown host mars.dusk.local
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon stop
 * Stopping Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon                               
      [ OK ]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ping mars.dusk.local
PING mars.dusk.local (192.168.15.75) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from mars.dusk.local (192.168.15.75): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=87.4 ms
64 bytes from mars.dusk.local (192.168.15.75): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=35.5 ms
64 bytes from mars.dusk.local (192.168.15.75): icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=57.0 ms
...
