The reason this is irritating is that CUPS and other services with web interfaces will occasionally redirect you to web pages using the FQDN of the host. At that point, you get an error. Here's a demonstration of the problem. This is on my server (which is running bind9 itself): [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ping mars.dusk.local ping: unknown host mars.dusk.local [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon stop * Stopping Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon [ OK ] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ping mars.dusk.local PING mars.dusk.local (192.168.15.75) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from mars.dusk.local (192.168.15.75): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=87.4 ms 64 bytes from mars.dusk.local (192.168.15.75): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=35.5 ms 64 bytes from mars.dusk.local (192.168.15.75): icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=57.0 ms ... -- avahi did not warn .local SOA in use https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/98763 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
