The problem turned out to be a broken DVD rewriter, I took the rewriter out and the problem went away. However, there was no indication that this was the problem, it was a pure fluke that I discovered it. So although the bug has been marked invalid, there is in fact still a bug: the kernel should not hang indefinitely due to a bad DVD rewriter controller.
Of course this kernel is now two Ubuntu releases out of date, so the chances of anyone wanting to follow this up are probably very small :-) ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- Kernel 2.6.20-16.29 fails to boot where 2.6.20-16.28 was fine https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/119666 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
