I have a boot menu but when I hit 'Enter' on the Vista entry it says
starting up... and hangs there. The last time I tried (before installing
latest kernel upgrade (proposed) on ubuntu) it kept rebooting.

Nope just "Starting up..." and waits there with the cursor blinking.
