This sounds like it could be caused by bug 188226. You may also want to monitor the cpu usage, e.g. by running "top" in a terminal.
If there's high CPU load, you may want to try the new kernel from hardy- proposed (by activating the hardy-proposed repository and installing the new kernel from there).
