I looked more closely.  The precipitating event wasn't the addition and
removal of my Ipod.  The USB storage device disconnected, then
reattached.

You can see the disconnect, and resultant file system errors in the
kern.log.

I can't eliminate the possibility of a hardware issue or loose cable.
I'll wait until this issue reappears (if it does) to update this bug
report.
