I later noticed lots of other things were broken.
The background was black and remained unresponsive (could not click on it to 
change properties say). I did not fix this...
The Nautilus file browser had gone (had to reinstall it).
I think I noticed another big problem (something missing!?). Anyway, to cut a 
long story short, I reinstalled Ubuntu 7.10 and I am not going to touch Ubuntu 
8.04 for another year.

Thanks to all those other people who are willing to be beta-testers to what, 
slightly prematurely, has been called a stable release.
