I made mistake: I have Xubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) not 8.10 :) I tried to update AbiWord to latest version (2.6.3) hoping it will fix this problem. I followed http://abisource.com/wiki/Install_on_Ubuntu, installed new abiword and abiword-plugin packages. It still doesn't work. Only difference is that now it prints "Aborted" instead of "Segmentation fault".
