I have the same symptoms which are caused by mysqld crashing with a
signal 4. Can you take a look at your log file and see if you have the
same problem?  Do the following:

    $ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start
    $ tail -n50 /var/log/syslog

And look for a statement as to why mysqld shut down. I got a signal 4
on my system.

Here's a trimmed-down version of the syslog:

Oct 15 15:27:06 localhost mysqld_safe[30803]: started
Oct 15 15:27:06 localhost mysqld[30806]: 061015 15:27:06
...
Oct 15 15:27:06 localhost mysqld[30806]: InnoDB: Doing recovery: scanned up to
log sequence number 0 43655
Oct 15 15:27:06 localhost mysqld[30806]: mysqld got signal 4;
...
Oct 15 15:27:06 localhost mysqld_safe[30812]: ended
...
Oct 15 15:27:20 localhost /etc/init.d/mysql[30956]: error: 'Can't connect to
local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'

I just upgraded to Edgy beta to get the Radeon 7000 fix for a Dell
PowerEdge 1800 (Xeon w/ HT and EMT64) and have this problem. I upgraded
to Edgy beta on a Dell 640m laptop (Core Duo) and everything works fine.
