It seems that the driver you suggest (173.08) is not compatible with all
the cards. Only for some Geforce series, and not all the models. Quadro
cards are not supported.

But please notice that there is no problem with the -generic kernell,
using the nvidia-glx-new. Only problems with the -rt kernell. So the
nVidia driver may not be the only reason of the bug.

First point, I will test the envyng-gtk package wich seems to detect the
gpu, and auto download, compil, install and set up the latest
manufacturer driver (nVidia or ATI) and let you know if it is better.

Second point, It seems that installing nvidia-glx package don't enable
well the acceleration (gnome effects), I will test that too and report.
