Solved my sound problem in Ubuntu 8.04
I have a COMPAQ C500 Notebook. In Edgy I have configured my modem with
the driver Dell use with its Linux notebooks. (hsfmodem). While
searching for a solution in the Internet I found the following article
which I followed step by step and VOILA!, sound return to my laptop. The
culprit was the hsfmode driver installed on my computer. Once removed
and performed the remaining steps in the article everything works back
again.

If you have a similar problem, this will solve the sound problem. Only
works if you have installed a hsfmodem driver in your laptop or
computer. Works for me!
