I had this problem with Gutsy and still have it with Hardy. My graphics card in an nVida GeForce Go 7400. On the advice of the nVidia forums, I edited my modprobe options file to set the graphics card at maximum frequency (i.e. disable throttling). This has reduced locks up from every couple of hours to once ever couple days. Still unacceptable, but a huge improvement. Here's the workaround I used:
