Public bug reported:
I have a ubuntu 7.04 system with the following drives:
/dev/hda1 -> /mnt/xp
/dev/sda1 -> /mnt/home_backup
/dev/sda2 -> /
/dev/sda3 -> swap
/dev/sdb1 -> /var/storage2 (including about 400gb of home directories, files
etc)
/dev/sdc1 -> /var/storage (including
then I make a symbolic link /home /var/storage2/home/ and run the
system.
when I installed ubuntu 7.10 I mapped thease directories using the
installer to mount /var/storage and /var/storage2 with no issues. With
Ubuntu 8.04 (doing a fresh install not an upgrade) the installer began
to rm -fr all files from /var/storage2 and /var/storage1 resulting in
partial data loss until I realized what had happened.
Given that /var/storage and /var/storage2 did not map into any known
data structure those directories should have been left alone (as they
have been by older ubuntu isntallers, suse installers and other linux
installers for the past 5+ years!!)
