It's tricky because OOo is not like M$ Word. Use OOo 2.4 and try the following and see if it helps :
1) Open document (usually you will have this issue with documents that others give you) 2) File > Wizard > Dictionaries 3) Retrieve lists and select the dictionaries you need 4) Tools > Language > For all Text > (your language here) -- spellcheck thinks everything is spelled correctly on some files and when I go to spell check them it either says "no spelling errors " (which is not true) or starts spell checking documents that are not open.
