It happened to me too a couple of times since installing a fresh install
of Hardy on my Dell D400 (note: I just bought a new 5400 RPM 80 GB
Seagate disk, I had a 4200 RPM 30 GB Hitachi in the original
configuration. I had to make a workaround for the laptop disk killer bug
for the new disk).

On Gutsy I didn't have any problems with Ubuntu. Suspend worked almost
perfect (bluetooth didn't wake up after some sessions). Compiz worked
flawlessly no lockups, no hiccups.

Now I have occasional hiccups, inconsistent touchpad speed (sometimes it
works, sometimes it doesn't), I turned off Compiz what doesn't seem to
make much difference. And of course complete halts with Caps and Scroll
Lock lights flashing (it this kernel panic?).

For the hiccups I suspect Xorg which jumped to only 2% of the system
usage every now and then, but nevertheless made the system unresponsive
for a few seconds.

The kernel I'm using is '2.6.24-16-generic'. My dmesg is in the
attachment.
