I tried Giorgio's fix in kde3 (in ~/.kde/share/config/gtkrc-2.0):
include "/usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
style "user-font"
{ font_name="DejaVu Sans 8 " }
widget_class "*" style "user-font"
gtk-theme-name="Clearlooks"
gtk-font-name="DejaVu Sans 8 "

But it didn't fix the tabs issue (toolbars look nice though!)

When using tab mix plus, it's possible to have two rows of tabs. then
you really see what the problem looks like (see attachment)
