Actually, it's because usplash is spinning and using 100% CPU... it's really apparent that even things like disk access is sluggish during boot (disk not grinding nearly as fast).
I agree with everyone suggesting a fallback that I'd rather NOT see a usplash than end up with a slow-as-molasses bootup.
