Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22
Hi, There is a well documented bug where the master-volume does not work when you plug in headphones. It's been reported in bugs #s 134946, 124662, 41015, 38546, 26150, and perhaps even as far back as #8685, in 2004! There are reported fixes. I'd like to mention two important ones, both by Daniel T Chen. The first is patching /sound/pci/via82xx.c, as found in https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2006-April/000805.html The second, proposed in bug #41015 consists in exiting GNOME and typing from terminal and: 1) Unload the snd_intel8x0 driver: sudo modprobe -r snd_intel8x0 2) Reload the snd_intel8x0 driver: sudo modprobe snd_intel8x0 ac97_quirk=hp_only There are a few problems with these: To point out the obvious: if this fixed the problem, why am I still having it? The first patch reportedly occurred for linux-source-2.6.15, so I'm guessing it's incorporated into linux-source-2.6.22. I'd like to point out that the extension of via82xx.c has changed to via82xx.ko, which the text editor does not recognize as being in UTF-8 so you can't check if the patch is added... still, to be quite honest I'm not sure what I would look for in this file even if I could open it... =/ The second fix of unloading and loading the driver works, BUT you loose the headphone control on the volume panel... and this shouldn't be something you need loose, or even something you need to do if the problem is "fixed." This bug was not present in Dapper 6.06, since I never had any problems with this. However, from reading the bug reports, it's apparently been a problem since Edgy all the way to Hardy. I'd like to add that the bug has been recognized and assigned to varying Ubuntu teams & individuals, which I suspect either out of trusting previous fix claims and/or having more pressing bugs to attend to, have not properly given closure to this particular one. (I think that in and of itself is part of another, altogether different problem, but anyway....) I am quite the n00b here & have only been using Ubuntu for maybe 2 years, if that. My pulse still races a little when tinkering w/ system files and drives. But volume control is something that's very front-end and VERY noticeable, and this is probably not solvable by someone who is new to Linux. I think it's important that this be fixed, if nothing more than to get rid of a lingering bug that's been around a while and seems to already have a solution just waiting to be applied appropriately. I hope this gets the proper attention it deserves & sorry if it sort of turned into a rant...
