Ah, crap, I pretty much duplicated this in bug <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input- evdev/+bug/229229">#229229</a> with a few more details (sorry).
The main thing being that this appears to have been fixed here : https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_activity.cgi?id=14342 I never really used the tilting bits of my mouse but I sometimes tilt the wheel accidentally when pasting.
