hmm. i tinkered around some more and i haven't seen the bug in a while (a day). with my luck i'm sure i'll trigger it again sooner or later. :/
does the following affect it? - system->preferences->appearance->visual effects. select "none". - in synaptic do a _complete_ remove of all compiz related packages.
