Good News! The sound now works with Ubuntu 8.04 (this was for the Gateway laptop NX270S).
Originally, it did not work with 7.04. It still did not work when I used update manager to update to version 7.10. However, the upgrade to the latest Ubuntu 8.04 did the trick.
