Public bug reported:
Trying to boot Ubuntu 8.04 live cd on Compaq Presario SR1420NX and init
fails part way through with total lockup. Requires hard power cycle from
the button. Booted with safe graphics, "noacpi", and "nolacpi", also
turned off "quiet" and "splash" to get further information on init. Goes
through init sequence and then starts scanning hardware, seems to get
past most things, then abruptly locks with a traceback and the following
3 messages:
init: rcs main process (6052) killed by SEGV signal
init: unable to execute "/bin/sh" for rc-default, no such file or directory
init: rc-default main process (7370) terminated with status 255
I was able to write down some of the traceback, but could not get all of it. I
do not have them in front of me, but the last 3 lines were:
sys_stat... (indecipherable scribble of my own making)
sysentry-post-esp+0x6b/0xA9
vcc_getsockopt+0x150/0x170
Specs on Presario: Celeron D 340 @ 2.93 GHz, 533 FSB, 2 GB RAM, AC97
integrated audio, RTL8100C 10/100 LAN, 80 GB HD, 9-in-1 media card
reader, bunch-o-USB, 1394, CD reader, DVD writer, using PCI NVIDIA
graphics card.
The box currently runs MS Windows XP with no errors. I was trying to
load the live CD to create a dual-boot setup.
I have flash booted this machine before with a version of Puppy Linux.
