NOTE:

after the initial 'upgrade' bang settled to a low hum, and finally
dimished into ... silence, i decided it might be worth checking update-
manager [gui]. indeed, a few updates were available (see attached).

I proceeded with 'Install'. again, i am prompted for keyboard layout,
via the 'dumb terminal' (?) part of the Update Mgr gui. Again, i have
(est.) 6 options, all Afghani. This time, i chose #6 -- though incorrect
(should be US standard), i selected just to allow procedure to advance.
Process completes w/out error, prompting that, upon restart, new
settings shall be applied. I have NOT yet restarted, for fear of losing
my input device calibration for US (anxious that an Afghanistan KB
layout will be absolutely foreign to me).

Observation:
Afghanistan is the very first available option in the GUI > Settings Mgr >
Keyboard . config options. hmph! Okay, so i ensure that this is set to US.
TRUE. (he wonders, where then has this 'new', incorrect config been logged /
set to be applied / whatever. he decides to uncheck 'let x control keyboard',
which allowed the modding this config. shooting in the dark, he adds another
layout-- dupe of default, to be also US. (hoping perhaps this might override
that config of Update-Manager-- though he suspects this is not going to affect
that Update Mgr change)

DOH! (he thinks to himself: this is the Xubuntu x64 distribution!!! for the AMD
64-bit processor. the processor here, since sys mainboard, etc. upgrade is now
Pentium 4D 3Ghz!! what a dope! but, what's this? it's working? hmmm....
scratching much head here. is this Hardy, or somewhere in between? what to do?)
realizing this is bug report commentary, he does not expect the commentary to
be directly addressed-- but wished to report the significat facts, previously
simply forgotten as hardware upgrade took place during an XP usage period.

thank you for your hard work on this issue, and good luck.
