Downloading to the Desktop. My suspicion is that the Firefox code structure does not permit the 'cancel' function while the download is being initialized - and - the initialize isn't marked as 'complete' since there isn't room for the download, hence it cannot be canceled AND it can't be downloaded - locking the download into the list, effectively. I deleted a large folder that I have a backup copy of - the download started and THEN I was able to click on the 'red circle X' and sucessfully cancel the download - once it was in progress. So I have a work around for you (and me!) - at least for those who can free up enough space for the selected download(!).
