This problem looks different than what I reported in that forum thread.
On my system, I see the problem every few months.  On my system,
everything will be working fine, and then out of the blue sdb stops
responding to SATA commands completely, and not even a shutdown -r now
fixes it.  A power cycle is needed.  Before a reboot, the kernel doesn't
notice anything even if I hot-unplug the hard drive.  I think this means
that port on the SATA controller isn't giving any results at all, not
even link detection.

 In the log above, after every port reset Linux detects a drive with the
right size.  On my system, there is no response at all from the drive
when the problem is happening.
