I have a Dell Dimension E520 with the following audio: lspci -vv | grep -i audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
I fixed the problem by installing the linux-ubuntu-modules package for my kernel (only the generic was installed and I was running the 386 kernel).
