Seems Acer has a real problem with Ubuntu. On the alpha versions of Hardy I also didn't get sound, but this got better with the release of the beta. BUT after resuming from standby/hibernation the sound is gone :( Maybe putting sudo alsa force-reload in the init scripts will fix thing - will check it out.
