I believe that I'm having the same problem as Serpentus. I've got no sound except through headphones. I've gone through and followed all the instructions from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449. I've had this issue ever since I got this computer and installed 7.04 on it. At one point through fiddling, I managed to do a complete swap and then only had sound from my speakers; plugging in my headphones did not mute the speakers or produce sound. I needed headphone-only sound which I got by doing a complete reinstall when upgrading to 8.04.
