Hello. I can confirm this problem also, but I have not been able to reproduce the problem at all.
All I can say: - I am doing nothing whith pidgin when it takes all cpu, just connected with guinotifications. No chat window open. - I check with top and see about twelve pidgin processes, killing one of them closes all others. - Just running firefox...
