I'm on Hardy release and I'm having the same problem; my sound seems to
work in every way except capture from the system. I can't use any
combination of settings or applications I have become used to trying
that will record say a streaming audio program that is coming through
the speakers. I've enabled capture in the volume/mixer, and selected it
in the apps. When I try System > Preferences > Sound to test capture,
it doesn't work either. No error messages, just silent. I found a lot
of forum posts describing the same thing, but no answers. I've attached
the alsa info text - I am willing to test proposed solutions.

note: as a final effort, I turned on proposed updates in the
repositories and installed it all, including a new kernel (reflected in
the attached file). This made no difference at all.

Sound worked great in Gutsy, I can only assume it's the new PA bits.

Thanks!
