I have had no time to play with the "acpi=off" option and enjoyed two weeks of
freeze-free bliss... until today.
I am a little worried playing with that one option on a notebook (doesn't no
acpi mean no fan ?).

When seeing the early signs of a freeze (that is the light for the hard disk
continuously on for few seconds, without blinking),
dashing "tail /var/log/messages" gave a last line like:
kernel: [4249.908524] res 40/00:00:00 [... many 00 ...] Emask 0x4 (timeout)

After reboot that last line does not appear in log/messages anymore (makes
sense, no I/O when the problem occurs... but might
appear on the spot because of some sort of buffering happening).

Since ACPI's involment in the case is suspected, here is what I have in logs
with ACPI
(no idea whether this is relevant or not)
[ 32.899330] ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... error, file /DSDT.aml
not found.

Thanks,

L.
