Same problem here with an nvidia board.

A funny thing happens that make me think that it might not be due to the
nvidia drivers, but to kdm itself or to how kde interacts with it:

if I switch to the free nv driver from the nvidia one, the black screen
issue seems to be resolved, but another issue appears:  the kdm welcome
screen now appears at a wrong resolution/screen size.

To explain better: I work at 1280 x 1024.  When I log out, the kdm
screen appears at a much lower resolution (likely 1024 x 768 or even
lower) and the window is uncentered, because the whole screen can be
panned left and right, up and down, moving the low resolution view over
the 1280x1024 real screen size.

Most definitively all caused by a kdm problem.
