Update: The above is valid if the Visual Effects settings in Gnome (Under System -> Preferences ->Appearence -> Visual Effects) are set to "Normal". The application stays on top and active until closed or the user chooses another application to be on top.
If the Visual Effects settings are set to "None" the following happens: Minimize the application and it restores itself once but not on top and not active.
