Same problem: ZyXEL G-220-v2 USB wireless worked in Ubuntu 7.10
but not in booting up 8.04 Live CD. I use WPA2 encryption.
It appears to associate with AP but cannnot ping it, and wpa_cli output
indicates it loses connection:

=========== wpa_cli ===========
# wpa_cli status
Selected interface 'eth1'
bssid=00:13:10:[xx.xx.xx]
ssid=mySSID
id=0
pairwise_cipher=CCMP
group_cipher=CCMP
key_mgmt=WPA2-PSK
wpa_state=4WAY_HANDSHAKE

But then, immediately issue a second wpa_cli:
# wpa_cli status
Selected interface 'eth1'
wpa_state=ASSOCIATING

Successive invocations of wpa_cli give the same result.

Some more maybe useful data:

========= Fedora 9 same problem ==========
I then tried live booting fedora 9 and had similar problem
and same ioread error in dmesg.

It works fine in Ubuntu 7.10 and OpenSUSE 10.3 (kernel 2.6.22).
