It's been a while since I had this problem and it have since updated to 0.11.5-0ubuntu6 via the automatic updates.
The problem has disappeared in that the visualisation plugin I was using (projectM) no longer appears as an option and seems to have been disabled in rhythmbox. I started rhythmbox yesterday for the first time since filing this bug and the visualisation was turned off. I apologise for spending so long getting around to checking this.
