This does not really solve the issue, since other programs might modify the 
contents of the first sector.
On ubuntuusers.de, someone reported that the FS driver 
http://www.fs-driver.org/ must have done so; after installing it, the vol_id 
detection was broken.

Bill Metzenthen's ideas (see above) appear to be good solutions for
this.
