sorry:),my first time reporting a bug.and here i describe some details.
on 8.04lts,it used to be good, from the begin of my using ubuntu606 to now(804)

recent changes, maybe after some automatic updates of
"gnome-panel (1:2.22.1.3-0ubuntu1) to 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu1"
"gnome-panel-data (1:2.22.1.3-0ubuntu1) to 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu1"
at 5.29
but i didn't notice that just after above upgrade taking place. so I
can't make sure the key changes.
now, i can not see it on panel, it's there, response my right click,
just invisible
i can add more icon, others seem work well, only trash icon ...
reboot ,restart gdm,...not works.
reinstall g applet or panel, didn't work too.
seems a bug?

thank you!

best wishes!
