like what Albert Cardona wrote, i had this problem when i tried to reinstall my drivers after i already updated to hardy. Everything failed, the hardware manager, envy, everything. someone told me from this bug report that installing linux-restricted-modules would fix it, so i tried that, went back to hardware manager and clicked 'enable ati drivers' and then restarted, and it worked.
