I probably have , more or less, related issues: 1. Sound volume is to low. I run a dual-boot system in Windows XP and sound is ok there, so don't play me the "the maximum level is the maximum you can get out of your sound card"-card, because it's simply not true.
2. I am unable to change the sound level by either the volume panel or the shortcut on by keyboard. The system shows that the sound level is changed, but I have no (noticable) change in sound. Lowering the master- volume untill it is muted, does actually mute the sound. Setting the volume with a player-integrated volume changer (for instance the one of rhthmbox) does change the sound level, but never above a certain very low maximum. All errors started with the introduction of ubuntu 8.04, and are rather annoying.
