I'm having the same problem. I get the login prompt, login, then get
the beige/brown screen and the mouse pointer. None of the logs have an
error message.

The trigger for this seemed to be when I had to manually re-installed
the gnome power management daemon (I got an error stating the
configuration file was incorrect/contact your admin). I had also noted
none of the desktop setting/management tools were working. Couldn't
change the screen resolution through gnome. Couldn't change the
wallpaper or screen fonts either. It accepted and saved the settings
but did nothing. Reboot, no changes even though the settings still
showed the new changes I put in.

As before, no error messages in any log indicating a problem was
encountered.

Anyone have any ideas? I'd hate to have to re-install the Ubuntu.
