I have managed to 'fix' this problem.  I logged in as root, navigated to
/var/lib/dpkg/info and did a mv evolution-common.list evolution-
common.bak and then I was able to use the Update Manager to upgrade the
packages.

It appears that this has nothing to do with Google Earth.  I think that
was just co-incidence.

would appear that there is a bug in Update Manager.  For some reason the
package information in /var/lib/dpkg/info is getting corrupted -
different files each time and sometimes multiple file.  I wonder if
Update Manager is being a little too quick in closing down the terminal
session that it is using to run dpkg?  i.e. before dpkg has completed.

There is still a bug to be fixed - but there is a workround.
