I too had this exact same problem. For me it only appeared around the time of the upgrade from gutsy to hardy, although it might not have been straight away, but with one of the subsequent kernel upgrades. Following what zcrar70 wrote, I tried the reinstallation of uswsusp, and it fixed the problem. Thanks zcrar70.
