I've finally succeeded with adjusting the screen brightness. Firstly, I've added acpi_fake_ecdt=1 option to boot parameters. Then switched to the console and was able to adjust the brightness by
cat $VALUE > /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness. However, this still doesn't work for adjusting the brightness from within X.
