Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-new
I'm running Hardy 64 bit, ubuntu install but with KDE installed.
My system has an ECS Mainboard 6100-pn-m2 with the nforce 430 chipset
and an embedded nVidia 6100 graphics adapter.
I have installed nvidia-glx-new (aka 169.12) but the problem exists also
in nvidia-glx, although, if anything, the problem is made worse in
nvidia-glx-new.
The basic problem I have is that the screen shows artifacts & damage
soon after a GL program is run (I've tried compiz, stellarium, and even
glxgears exhibits this effect). The damage usually means that icons on
the left of the screen begin to disappear, and kicker icons turn into
solid green colors. Text in konsoles/irc/gmail etc., get turned into
solid block lines. Occasionally the whole server locks up making all
sorts of wavy lines all over the screen - at this point I have to hard
reboot the PC.
I've installed the nvidia driver via module-assistant auto-install and
aptitude install nvidia-glx-new (after first installing nvidia-glx, and
not getting the expected behavior). Additionally, while I can get compiz
to work, it makes the text consoles unusable and I can't play video at
all - that results in a green screen in vlc/gxine/mplayer. Once I
restart X in regular 2D mode, everything works, until I try a 3D app
again.
Furthermore this looks like a packaging bug, but not sure. In
/usr/lib/nvidia and /usr/lib32/nvidia I see this:
