I have the same problem. Network Manager 0.6.6 (at ubuntu hardy)
connects to internet using GPRS/UMTS (My modem: Huawei E220, HSDPA-
uppgraded) but the tray icon indicates a warning sign with "!" and
displays mouseover text "No network connection". Internet applications
like firefox and Pidgin... starts in offline mode.

I'll send syslog and messages my ppp-conect-errors is emty.
