No, it does not depend on an specific icon theme. I am used to try new icon themes, if they look nice. And xfdesktop crashes, while I'm switching to the new icon set for example and then back to the one I normally use, if I don't like the new one. But the icon theme I use is not the "default" and as I don't have KDE installed, it's not "kubuntu" as well.
