Same issue here with ubuntu 8.04 and frozen bubble. I can start the game with sound from a terminal, but no luck yet from menu item.
Dick, I haven't installed Alien Arena so I don't know the exact name of the command. You can check for such this way: right click on applications > edit menus > games > right click on AA item and look at the properties. Then you just need to open a terminal from applications > accesories > terminal. And run the command you found on the AA menu item properties.
