OK, I've just confirmed for myself that even though I'm now running the "2.6.24-18-generic" kernel, I'm still seeing it. My laptop is a HP Pavilion DV 1737 TU (a variant of the DV1000). I bought it in December 2006 in Australia.
As mentioned I first starting seeing this behavior in 7.10, however, this 8.04 install is on a new HD and completely fresh.
